New Delhi: Delhi Police officials deployed to manage a demonstration at an airport on Thursday allegedly misbehaved with journalists and one official reportedly broke the camera of a photojournalist.
Employees of Airports Authority of India Limited had organised the demonstration at the Indira Gandhi Airport as part of the nationwide strike called by Left unions.
Agency reports say a police team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police B B Choudhary misbehaved with journalists after failing to pacify the demonstrators.
Choudhary allegedly snatched PTI photojournalist Kamal Singh’s camera and smashed it on the ground. He allegedly threatened Singh and "ordered" his men to arrest him, PTI reported. "The camera costs Rs 100,000," said Singh.
The journalists alleged that Joint Commissioner of Police Aditya Arya, who came to the airport after hearing of the incident, refused to accept their demand for lodging a first information report (FIR) against Choudhary.
"If you ask me a question and expect me to answer immediately, it's not possible. I can't say anything right now. Let me find out what has happened. It is definitely wrong but the question of responsibility or irresponsibility comes only after knowing the incident. I can't say anything before that," said Arya.
The journalists said an official of the local police station “noted” their complaint but refused to register an FIR.
Police Commissioner K K Paul promised to the journalists that action would be taken against Choudhary.
