Ammasi had hung the key on a nail after locking the house and proceeded to attend a parade. Police said most of the residents in the quarters used to leave the keys at the entrance of their houses, as they considered the police quarters safe.When Ammasi returned after parade, she found the lock, key and the jewels from the locker missing. She lodged a complaint with the Tallakulam police.In the meantime, Kalaiyarasi, another constable, also complained that gold jewels were missing from her quarters when she returned from the parade. She had not locked the door when she left for the parade.Inspector Nagarajan booked a case and started investigating. Prabakar Mani was arrested when he tried to sell the stolen jewellery to a private jewellery shop.  Prabakar Mani admitted to the offence and said he removed his finger print using a cloth.
