VIJAYAWADA: The government contract lecturers called off their nineday strike on Friday following the state government's assurance of constituting a cabinet subcommittee to look into their demand.
A delegation of Contract Lecturers Association met secondary education minister Kolusu Parthasarathi here on Friday, who assured them that the state government would not take up fresh recruitments until their problems are solved.Later speaking to newsmen, the minister said that the government is committed to resolve the demands of the contract lecturers.

"There is no provision to appoint lecturers in junior colleges by regularising contract lecturers. The cabinet subcommittee will look into the issue. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has agreed to appoint the cabinet subcommittee for the benefit of contract lecturers who have been working for nearly 12 years," the minister said. The lecturers said they called off the strike in view of the board examinations.
