KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Monday directed the state government to constitute an expert committee to study the groundwater consumption by Pepsico India Holdings in Palakkad.
The committee should look into aspects such as availability of water and the maximum quantity of water that could be extracted and file a report within three months. However, the court granted permission to the company to draw six lakh litres of water per day until the study report is submitted.

Justice P R Ramachandra Menon passed the order while considering a petition filed by Pepsico India Holdings Pvt Ltd praying the court to quash the government order directing it to reduce the use of water to 2.34 lakh litres a day.

The company was drawing 5.5 lakh litres water a day. The government has no authority to direct the company to restrict the use of water.

The study reported that the company was extracting water 48.8 per cent above the permissible quantity.

The court said the government stand that no further study was needed was not correct.
