Chennai: Heavy rains in Chennai have given the city and its residents a flood of woes. Besides being forced to deal with waterlogged roads and traffic jams, the motorists now have to worry about roads caving in. The non-stop heavy rains have left the city’s roads bruised and battered. And many road have caved in.
A number of arterial roads including PS Sivasamy Salai in Mylapore, Taramani Link Road, and Devanathan Street in Mandaveli have collapsed following pounding rain in the last few weeks. Police have cordoned off sections of the roads, forcing motorists to take a diversion.
Chennai Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kapur said, “these things have happened where sewer lines have burst. Metro water engineers and corporation engineers on the spot to rectify it. Very isolated incidents. The rainwater tends to enter sewer lines leading to pressure build up."
He added that some bit of inundation because of downpour and cave-ins are localised. He promised that they will be addressed in the next few days and some very deep sewers will take a few more days.
Reacting to a question on whether contractors will be hauled up for poor quality roads, Vikram Kapur said, "most damaged roads are 3 years old and filling up potholes was happening on war footing."
Commenting on Chembarambakkam lake water being discharged and whether the people are being evacuated he said, "as we speak discharge gone up to 20000 cusecs in Chembarambakkam. Even Poondi has surpluses. Relief centres open. Food being provided. Boats are on standby. Some zones being deployed. The NDRF on standby. Most of low lying areas -people are being evacuated."
