BANGALORE: Traffic jams, signals going red and green, BMTC buses, trucks, two wheelers, four wheelers, autos waiting in queue are some of the regular sights in the city. But what happens when a traffic signal plays hide and seek with the commuters instead of making traffic motion easier. The traffic signal at the Sri Avani Shankar Mutt, at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar near Basaveshwara Nagar, has not been functioning properly for over a month now. This is the link road between Rajajinagar and Basaveshwara Nagar. The signal is proving to be a nightmare for the people to commute. The signal’s waiting timer is facing some sort of technical issues, thus creating a traffic nuisance for both the pedestrians and commuters. The timer is not in sync with the signal lights which has created a lot of confusion. Srinivas, a commuter says, “Everyday I pass by this signal, when ever the red light is on, the count down begins from 180. When the number comes down till 70, it starts all over from 180 again. This has happened a number of times. If not for this then, the timer displays numbers randomly, even when the green signal is on. This has vehemently delayed the movements of the vehicles making the commuters all the more frustrated .”Also the traffic police in this area have not taken any action. Srinivas says, “I have complained to the traffic police at the signal. He said it is not our responsibility, we are just doing what we are told to do.” To this Srinivas adds, “The traffic police don’t really care about the safety, they use this signal to their advantage and impose penalty on as many offenders possible. If we try to explain the problem they are not willing to listen or cooperate.”Apart from this, there are two pedestrian signal near by, which are facing problems of its own. Srinivas says, “In one pedestrian signal, the lights are not displayed, so the pedestrians dodge the vehicles when they cross. In the other signal both the lights are on, and as usual everyone are in a rush.”City Express brought the issue of malfunctioning of the signals to the notice of the Traffic Mangament Centre (TMC). ACP Pasha from TMC says, “No one brought it to our notice, I will work on it right away. I will make sure that, we find out the problem by today itself and if possible we will fix it right away.”
