BHADRAK: The case of alleged rape and murder of a 19-year-old college girl in Bhadrak took a new turn on Thursday after police informed that the girl had allegedly committed suicide over a failed love affair. She was a student of Bhadrak Autonomous College. After preliminary investigation, police revealed that Susmita Pallai had committed suicide by consuming poison. Earlier on Wednesday, driver of a private bus Raghunath Nayak and bus conductor Karthik Chandra Hajira were arrested for allegedly raping and murdering the girl on Tuesday evening. The girl had been brought to Agarapada Community Health Centre (CHC) under Agarapada police limits by two youths. The doctor, however, declared her brought dead following which, the youths fled from the spot leaving the body behind. Their arrest came after the two youths - Bubuna Pattnaik and Bapunu Jena both belonging to Bidyadharpur in Keonjhar district - revealed before police that they were standing with their motorcycle near Bidyadharpur when driver stopped the bus and asked them to take the girl to the nearby hospital ‘as she fell unconscious due to ill-health’. ASP Suresh Chandra Das, who is the investigating officer, said Susmita’s diary was found from the owner of the bus and it was handed over to him by the driver. Susmita had reportedly given the diary to him before consuming poison. Susmita had written in the diary that she had an affair with conductor Hajira and the latter ditched her when she asked him for marriage. Police investigation revealed that Susmita was first brought to IMFA Mines hospital at Boula, by Hajira for treatment and then shifted to Soso hospital and then to Agarpada CHC. “Susmita was alive while undergoing treatment at the IMFA Mines hospital and according to the doctor, she appeared to have consumed poison,” said the ASP.Meanwhile, students of Bhadrak Autonomous College blocked the NH-5 on Thursday demanding stringent action against the accused and compensation of ` 10 lakh for kin of the deceased. Similar agitation was carried out by villagers of Ranipur and adjacent villages who blocked Bhadrak-Burla road passing through the village.
