New Delhi: A Muslim cleric who had gone to visit Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal at his residence was caught with a live bullet while being frisked, Delhi Police said on Tuesday morning.
The man, identified as Mohammad Imran, told police that he found the bullet in the donation box of his mosque around three months ago, kept it in his wallet and later forgot about it. He claimed he had planned to throw the bullets in the river Yamuna but decided to keep it.
Imran is a caretaker at a mosque called Masjid Bawli Wali in Karol Bagh. He was among a dozen clerics who had gone to Arvind Kejriwal's home for a public hearing or janta durbar, to discuss the issue of increasing salary of staff working at the Delhi Waqf Board.
The 39-year-old has been arrested under the stringent Arms Act and an investigation has been launched.
“During the search, a live cartridge of .32 bore was recovered from his purse by security staff deputed at Kejriwal's residence. Imran was handed over to the local police and accordingly, a case was registered at the Civil Lines police station,” a police officer said.
The incident comes just days after Kejriwal alleged there was a threat to his life from his political rivals, after he was attacked with chilli powder inside the Delhi Secretariat.
“They all want to kill me. There would not be any CM, who has been attacked four times in two years. I have become eyesore for them,” Kejriwal said.
The Aam Aadmi Party chief had on Monday, too, asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step down if he cannot ensure Delhi chief minister's security.
He alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was behind the November 20 chilli attack as it was "baffled" by the "good work" done by his government in the national capital.
"These attacks are not on me, but on the people of Delhi instead... Modi ji is taking revenge from Delhiites for voting the AAP to power in the city," the chief minister said.
