CUTTACK: In an exemplary order, the Orissa High Court has directed a 19-year-old youth, accused of outraging modesty of a woman, to undergo ‘Kar Seva’ or community service by cleaning shoes of devotees at the temple of Goddess Cuttack Chandi here. Granting bail to Suman Patra alias Tiki of Saanta Sahi under Purighat police limits, the single judge bench of Justice C R Dash has set the condition of cleaning shoes once a week for 12 weeks. Patra had been arrested by police on charges of misbehaving with a 22-year-old woman at a marriage function on June 29 this year. The judge observed that such condition was imposed for reforming him and taking into consideration his tender age and no past criminal record. Patra has been released on bail by executing a bond of `20,000 with two sureties. He would now have to appear before the investigating officer (IO) of police twice a week on the day and time fixed by the latter. Every Sunday at 4 pm, he shall appear before the IO, who would take him to Chandi temple where he would clean shoes of devotees for two hours. The executive officer of the temple has been directed to make arrangements for the same. The ‘Kar Seva’ has to be served for 12 weeks, Justice Dash has ruled. On June 29, Patro had been to the marriage function in Saanta Sahi locality where he allegedly made indecent gesture towards the woman. The woman had complained about his behaviour to her brother. When he confronted Patro, the latter and his friends beat him up. Other family members of the woman were also assaulted by Patro and his friends. A complaint had been filed at Purighat police station and Patro was arrested on July 4. The lower court had rejected his bail petition and he had been spending his time in jail since then.
