KOCHI: In an effort to bring down accident rate in Kochi, the Motor Vehicles Department has decided to take a slew of measures including vitalising the activities of the Road Safety Authority in the district. As part of the endeavour, the Motor Vehicles Department with the help of the public will identify the black spots in Kochi.The public can alert the authorities about the accident prone areas in their neighbourhood. Once such spots are identified, the department will take proper measures to rectify the defect.  “There are many black spots which are prone to accidents in the city. After identifying such spots, we will rectify the damage with help from agencies like the police and the Public Works Department,” said T J Thomas, RTO, Ernakulam.The department will seek the help of PWD for preparing the estimate of the work. “If the cost of the work is less than Rs 50,000, we will allot funds from the District Road Safety Council." "If the requirement of fund is more than Rs 50,000,  we will have to seek aid from the state authority,” Thomas said.Various programmes for creating awareness on traffic laws and safety measures will be organised in connection with the endeavour. The agencies like the police will be given adequate support for the cause. Devices like breath analysers will be given to the police to help them check traffic violations. The money for such projects will be disbursed from the Road Safety Fund.The meeting of the District Road Safety Council to be held on July 6 will take decisions on vitalising the activities of the council. The public can submit the complaints in this regard to the RTO or the District Collector. The RTO in turn will send the complaint to the agencies concerned for rectification.
