HYDERABAD/VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as people gear up to celebrate Sankranti, severe cold conditions have played a dampener to the festivities. The temperatures across the state have plummeted to new lows in the past 24 hours, with the lowest minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, lowest this season, being recorded at Adilabad. The minimum temperatures dropped significant by 2-3 degree Celsius below normal in many places of Coastal Andhra and Telangana regions.  Denizens in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari, Guntur, Adilabad, Khammam, Hyderabad, Medak, Nizamabad and Karimnagar are reeling in the sudden cold. Meteorology department officials attributed the dipping temperatures to the cold northerly winds blowing hard. They predicted that the situation is likely to continue during the next two nights forcing  citizens to remain indoors till late in the morning and in the evenings. In Hyderabad too, shops and commercial establishments also opened late in the morning and shut early. The minimum temperature dipped to 11 degree Celsius, one of the lowest temperatures in Hyderabad. It is expected to decrease further by one degree Celsius over the next 24 hours. In Visakhapatnam district, the minimum temperatures are hovering around 7 degrees Celsius in the agency areas like Chintapalle, Paderu and Araku valley. Despite the festive rush, majority of the private vehicles in the agency areas remained off the roads in the morning due to heavy fog and poor visibility.
