THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city stands to gain one lakh trees on June 3 this year. On the day, that many saplings will be planted by members of the Thiruvananthapuram Latin Archdiocese as part of its ongoing Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, the Latin Archbishop of Thiruvananthapuram M Soosaipakiam said on Sunday. The initiative, ‘Ente vishwasa vriksham’, is intended to bring to the fore environment-related problems and ill-effects faced by the society, Soosaipakiam said here after releasing the brochure of the action plan charted out by the pastoral council for the platinum jubilee celebrations. Soosaipakiam said that environment protection and conservation were the responsibilities of humankind in general. The source of all evil in the world today is over-exploitation of nature. ‘’Cruelty shown by man to the universe and its truths is, in fact, cruelty against himself. God created the universe for use, not misuse. There is an unwritten covenant between  universe and mankind. This covenant is essential for the continued existence of human beings and the equilibrium of the universe,’’ the Archbishop said.
