'We move the world....’, they sang in unison, followed by a thunderous response. The number composed by Branko Stark came as the perfect finale to the medley session that had five songs composed by international choral musician Branko Stark.
‘Choral Nite 2012’, by ‘Rock of Ages’ held at Kerala Fine Arts Hall on Saturday was unique in many ways. Unlike the usual choir concerts, popular chartbusters of R D Burman like ‘Jaane Man Jaane Man..’ and ‘Aalipazham Perukkan...’ composed by Ilayaraja were presented.
And the huge crowd, not less than 950, was another surprise of the event. The group introduced the four-part singing in choral music, that made it even more special.
The two-hour long musical evening saw countless songs, pop, country western, western classical, along with famous Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil film songs.
Branko Stark, the President and founder of the Croatian Choral Directors’ Association, who came down to the city to train the music group and to perform was the chief attraction of the show. The group performed 10 songs composed by Branko, among which was ‘We move the world....’ a song that talks about world peace and unity. The number turned out to be a major hit. “The song is a popular number, and has been presented in more than 23 countries all over the world,” informs Prakash George Mathan, founder and singer of ‘Rock of Ages’.
Orchestra was by Godwin Figueiredo, who has been the trainer of the music group for long.
“While selecting the songs, our only priority was to choose popular numbers that are melodious to hear,” says Prakash about the selection of songs.
The group, that aims to go beyond the boundaries of religion and language, was formed in the year 2005. This is the sixth show conducted by the group. Over the years, Rock of Ages’ has performed a variety of choral music drawn from greats like Mozart, Rossini, Cesar Franck, and popular hits of Beatles, Carpenters, Abba , hymns in Latin and German, to folk songs of international flavour.
The success of the show has spurred them on to plan something ambitious. “We are planning to form ‘Indian Choral Association’, under the leadership of Branko for promoting choral music all over the country. We hope to have it underway by 2014. We also plan to conduct World Choral Music Festival, and a few countries have already expressed interest to participate,” says Prakash.
