KOCHI: Taking up the challenge of CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan in its full spirit, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Friday said that the Piravom byelection would be a referendum on the nine-month-old UDF Government.“We are taking up Pinarayi’s challenge. He thought that the UDF would back out from the battlefield if he made such a challenge,” the veteran Congress leader said while inaugurating the UDF election convention at Piravom. When the UDF came to power, the LDF had said that the government was surviving on a slender majority and hence it would not be able to do anything. But can the LDF leadership point out even a single issue which had been delayed or postponed due to lack of majority or any other issues in the UDF, asked Chandy.Stating that Kerala had seen no development during the LDF regime, Chandy asked the people to compare that with his nine-month-old government. “The LDF had forgotten the people during its governance. But in the past nine months, the UDF was able to bring in many developments. The coach factory at Kanjikode has been materialised. The sanction for the Kochi Metro Rail project would be accorded in a few weeks, he said.UDF candidate Anoop Jacob, Finance Minister K M Mani, Excise Minister K Babu, Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty, Works Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju, Devaswom Minister V S Shivakumar, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John, UDF convener P P Thankachan, SJ (D) chairman M P Veerendrakumar, Kerala Congress (B) leader R Balakrishna Pillai, Kerala Congress (J) chairman Johny Nellore, DCC president V J Paulose, CMP leaders K R Aravindakshan and C P John and MLAs and MPs from the district were present.
