Melbourne: The much popular Bollywood blockbuster Chak De! India -- a movie that has already achieved the cult status amongst the nation’s youth – has now added another feather to its cap. The movie shot extensively in the Sydney and Melbourne has bagged the best film award at the fifth Australian Indian Film Festival (AIFF). The winner was announced last night at a dazzling ceremony at Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art.

Chak De! India was based on the Indian women’s hockey team’s 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games win. The movie features 90 Australian women hockey players and about 9000 locals as extras.

According to the media report, Gandhi My Father also featured on the winning list with actor Akshaye Khanna winning the best performance award for his portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi’s son Harilal. The movie was also recently accepted for competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Apart from that, the movie has also been shortlisted for the best screenplay award at the inaugural Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

The ten-day-long Australian Indian Film Festival which is being hailed as the largest foreign film festival in Australia will feature some of the finest films from India. It will showcase over 20 films along with hosting prominent personalities from the Indian film and fashion industry. The festival opened with the screening of the film Gandhi My Father.
