THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A research scholar on the Kariavattom campus of University of Kerala here on Tuesday suffered a head injury after the ceiling of his room in the researcher’s hostel collapsed over him. The victim was Jayaprakash, a research scholar at the Department of Sanskrit on the campus. According sources, the incident occurred around 8.30 am on Tuesday. Jayaprakash was inside the room reading, when a chunk of the ceiling got detached from the roof and fell on him. He was immediately taken to a city hospital and provided medical care. He also had to undergo a minor surgery as he sustained a long cut on his head, which needed as many as eight stitches. The SFI unit on the campus struck classes on Tuesday in protest against the incident. They alleged that the University authorities had repeatedly failed to ensure the safety of the inmates of the hostels on the campus as regular maintenance works were seldom done. They also said that the authorities had declined to meet the medical expenses of Jayaprakash, which provoked them to call for the strike. Meanwhile, P Raghavan, Joint Registrar for Administration, University of Kerala, acknowledged the fact that the condition of the hostel building, which was over three decades old, was alarming. ‘’Immediate steps will be taken to renovate the hostel building,’’ he told City Express. The SFI unit on the campus has been on a stir against the University authorities for the past two years over the dilapidated condition of all the buildings, especially those that functioned as hostels.
