THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If education is the moulding of better human beings, Smijith uses it for building a better society.  Smijith A N, a fourth year Applied Arts student at Fine Arts College here, is campaigning for a social cause through his project work. He is not just writing down pages and pages about his topic - ‘Organic waste management’ - but keeps popularising the message. “People have no civic sense. They are just throwing the waste wherever they could. I have seen a police vehicle dumping waste in a public place. My attempt is to make them   feel ashamed and stop throwing waste in this manner,” says Smijith.  He has written on sacks, posters and T-shirts the message of organic waste management and has displayed them at public places as he did on Sunday in front of the Pazhavangadi Ganapathi Temple and at many other places at many other times. As the next step, Smijith will travel throughout Kerala, especially in colleges and other educational institutions, to spread the message of ‘Waste management in a better way.’ “In the past, people had a feeling that toilet was something to keep away from homes. Now, there is hardly any home without bath-attached rooms. Likewise, the feeling that waste has to be thrown away in public places must change. The message of utilising domestic waste for making biogas and organic manure should also spread and gradually it must develop as a culture,” Smijith says about his ultimate aim. According to him, the government has, however, to find a solution for plastic waste management.   He has also made a sculpture in front of the college displaying the message as a part of his project work, which he started six months back. Smijith, with his classmate and friend Shanto, is also trying to make a video art. They have shot scenes from across the city of people throwing waste and the evils which follow it and are planning to show it throughout the state. Smijith, hailing from Mannuthy in Thrissur, is well-aware of waste management problem as he has seen the people of Lalur fighting against waste disposal in their land. Smijith warns that waste management would be one of the biggest crises of the future, unless his mission meets with success.
