TUMKUR: Given the turbulent times that he is facing, could former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa have asked for more?A taluk-level Sahitya Sammelan held at Bellavi, near here, on Thursday, turned into a show of strength for the beleagured politico, thanks to Tumkur Rural MLA B Suresh Gowda.A few officials, including Tumkur Deputy Commissioner Dr C Somashekara, were present at the event, where the MLA offered a silver sword to Yeddyurappa and wished him luck to win a ‘Maha Yuddha’ (great battle) — in what could be an allegory to the ongoing tussle in the BJP. Sources said that this would force other followers of the former CM to conduct similar shows. Meanwhile, Gowda inaugurated some of the development works commissioned during Yeddyurappa’s tenure. Even plaques of the works indicated that it was inaugurated by the former chief minister.Making no bones about the intent behind the event, Gowda said: “Yeddyurappa was invited to the Sammelana in order to offer him solace from political pressure.” Even principal of the Government PU College, went overboard in his welcome speech, wishing that Yeddyurappa should return as CM, in front of a capacity crowd of 10,000 persons.Earlier, Yeddyurappa was brought in a procession to the venue. The audience which was brought in buses from across the constituency, departed no sooner did Yeddyurappa leave. However, forgotten was the fact that the event was a literary one and one of its participants was Sammelana president Rachappa, who was overshadowed by the other participants.
