TUMKUR: The seemingly imminent resignation of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has all the potential to change political equations in the state.According to sources, the Lingayat leaders in the BJP who unconditionally supported Yeddyurappa were already speculating which party they should join. When the CM made it an issue of betrayal of power transfer from the JD(S) in 2008 it had gained momentum. The Lingayat leaders and those who represent the constituencies followed BSY.Some of the Lingayat leaders who were in the Opposition parties either followed him or indirectly helped him out.The reason being, the CM launched the dharma yuddha against the JD(S) from Siddaganga mutt with the blessings of the centenarian seer Dr Sri Shivakumara Swamiji. The entire BJP leadership including BJP national general secretary Ananthakumar had thronged the mutt along with the chief minister.Another Lingayat leader V Somanna quit Congress and joined BJP to stand by the Yeddyurappa. Many a leaders from other parties and communities too joined the BJP with their own calculations and benefited.Senior Congress leader from Tumkur G S Basavaraju remained with the Congress party during the 2008 assembly polls to help Somanna and the CM.The Somanna-Basavaraju combination helped Yeddyurappa and the BJP romp home but with a short of a few seats. In turn, Basavaraju realised that he will loose if contested on Congress party ticket in 2009 Lok Sabha polls. He switched to BJP and won.Now with Yeddyurappa probably making his way out as the chief minister, Basavaraju would think of returning to the Congress party. Two days ago he likened the PM to Lal Bahadur Shastri. This gave enough indication.By next general elections there would be no surprise of the likes of Basavaraju switching the parties leading to a political polarisation.A BJP leader told Express that it would be a good sign as the party will gain it’s image if opportunists quit by next elections.
