British GP: Hamilton pins hopes on McLaren upgrade
After a disappointing race in Valencia, Lewis Hamilton is looking at victory at his home race.

London: Following a disappointing race in Valencia, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton is eying victory in Sunday's British Grand Prix with an upgrade to his car.

"We've got some upgrades coming," Hamilton was quoted as saying by BBC Sport. "We're going to need them because other teams have obviously been making some serious steps forward."

Hamilton currently occupies third sport in the championship, 23 points clear of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso at No. 1.

McLaren have been plagued with pit-lane problems that are proving tough to eradicate, despite marked improvements in procedures, but Hamilton believed their car will be better suited to the fast Silverstone circuit. "Our car doesn't seem to go so well on the lower speed circuits like Valencia, but I think on the higher speed circuits like Silverstone, we should be able to be more competitive there," he said. "Trying to look after our tyres is our biggest problem so hopefully there's a better chance with the new upgrades."

Hamilton was defending third place in Valencia against Pastor Maldonado on the penultimate lap when the Venezuelan lost control of his Williams and shunted Hamilton into the wall and out of the race. Hamilton pummeled the steering wheel with his fists before tossing it out of the car and clambering out of the dented McLaren, saying very little to the reporters afterwards.

Speaking on the incident, Hamilton refused to dwell on the points he lost. "Sometimes you have to accept when things don't go your way in racing. Obviously it was frustrating to lose out so close to the finish, but that's motor racing: you put it behind you and move on to the next race - which, happily for me, is at my home circuit of Silverstone,” he said. "It doesn't really alter the way I go racing because I race to win, and that's what I'll be doing, especially at my home grand prix.”
