DHENKANAL: Mission 10,000 has missed its target by almost half with only 5,039 units of blood collected so far. And the December-end deadline leaves little time to complete the task. The district blood bank’s ambitious project followed last year’s success of Mission-5000. With the support of blood donors and Motivators Association, the blood bank had then collected 5,090 units of blood.Sources said lack of adequate infrastructure and shortage of technical staff have hampered blood collection in the rural belt. The fallout: The blood bank here has not been able to respond to the camps being organised at various places. At a recent camp organised at Hindol, Angul blood bank representatives had to fill in.In addition, there is no blood storage unit in Bhuban and Parjang. Patients from Bhuban have to travel 70 km to the district headquarters hospital in case of emergency. The storage units in Hindol and Kamakshyanagar too depend on the district blood bank for blood. With the district witnessing violence in the past over maternity deaths, availability of blood had become a contentious issue. NTPC had provided Rs 14 lakh for development of infrastructure and blood banks in the district last year. However, in the absence of proper monitoring there has been little headway.Motivator Association president Biranchi Narayan Pany said better coordination could help achieve the desired result. Admitting the pitfalls, CDMO B C Behera said there was a need for reform to increase the blood collection.
