A 23-year-old man was arrested in Karnataka’s Bengaluru for allegedly killing his aunt and stealing her jewellery for a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway with his girlfriend in Goa. The accused, identified as Jaswanth, is a native of Vijayawada and was pursuing his B.Tech degree.

The victim, 36-year-old Sukanya, a resident of Doddakallasandra near Electronic City, was married to Jaswanth’s maternal uncle, Narasimha Reddy. The couple had two children.

According to the police, Jaswanth was close to Sukanya and would often visit her house.

On February 11, he came to Bengaluru to visit Sukanya. He told her that he needed money to repair his car.

“Sukanya refused to lend him the money. Following this, Jaswanth hatched a plot to kill her and escape with the jewellery,” police said.

Jaswanth strangled his aunt, packed her body in a bag and took it to a secluded spot near Electronic City. He doused the body with petrol and set it on fire.

Later, he along with his girlfriend then fled to Goa with Sukanya’s gold chain and celebrated Valentine’s Day there, according to police.

The case came to light after police were alerted following Sukanya’s disappearance.

A special team was formed to investigate the case.

Police tracked down Jaswanth in Goa. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and told cops that he planned the murder.

“He had even bought a car a few days before the murder so that he could easily transport the body,” police said.

The police arrested Jaswanth and recovered the gold chain from his possession. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody.
