Lucknow: Marriage celebrations turned sour for a Dalit man when people making merry at his wedding procession were beaten up for carrying posters of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar.
The incident was reported from Asrauli village of Etah district on Wednesday night when some upper caste men allegedly attacked the baratis, snatched posters of the Dalit icon and warned them to not carry his photos if they wanted the procession to pass through the street. A police team was called in to rescue the baraatis and it helped them reach the wedding venue.
However, the police have registered FIRs from both the parties. As per the complaint filed by one Rinku who was part of the procession, “When the baarat came close to a function hall where an upper class wedding was taking place, we were attacked by five to six people. Our posters and pictures of Baba Saheb Ambedkar was snatched and torn and we were assaulted.”
Speaking to the media, OP Singh, ACP (crime), said, “Initially, we asked both sides to sort out the matter but they did not agree. So we have registered FIRs from both the sides in relevant sections of the IPC. We have also stepped up security in the village to avoid any untoward incident. No one has been arrested from either side and investigations are underway.”
