Nearly 500 agitators who tried to lay siege to Raj Bhavan against the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu were taken into preventive custody here on Thursday.
Hundreds of farmers belonging to Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene took out a protest rally from Freedom Park to Raj Bhavan at around 11.45 am.
When the rally reached Mahatma Gandhi statue near Anand Rao Circle at about 12.10pm, the police prevented the agitators from marching towards the Raj Bhavan. However, when the farmers tried to defy orders, the police took them into custody and released them later.
About 100 members of JD(S)Youth Wing who took out a semi-nude protest, were also arrested by the police.
Around 150 members of Nyayakkagi Navu, a forum of Dalit organisations, who tried to put a lock and disconnect water and power supply to Raj Bhavan were arrested. They were protesting against the silence of Governor H R Bhardwaj on the ongoing Cauvery issue. The protest rally that started from the Press Club and was stopped near the Raj Bhavan by the police.
Tto find a permanent solution to the Cauvery row, a team of progressive thinkers from Karnataka will be meeting the think tank in Tamil Nadu on October 7.
“We will be meeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and former CM M Karunanidhi and explain them the need to find out a permanent solution,” said Indudhar Honnapura, state-president of the forum.
DCP (Central) B R Ravikanthe Gowda told Express, “Around 500 police personnel were deployed near Freedom Park and Raj Bhavan. About 500 protesters were taken into preventive custody.” Meanwhile, Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Dr M A Saleem, said that the protesters are not allowed to block roads for more than 15 minutes.
