Tension prevailed for a while in the city after railway authorities tried to demolish the compound wall of Sri Shanta Durgadevi temple on Gadag Road here on Monday.
The railway authorities said that the temple was illegally built on railway property. However, irked over the action of the authorities, the members of Vishwa Hindu Parishat (VHP) along with local residents staged a snap protest.
They also staged a road blockade to express their ire.A heated argument took place between railway officials and members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishat following the protest.
Meanwhile, Chandrashekhar Gokak of the Parishat who held talks with railway authorities succeeded in stopping them from taking up the drive.
During the talks, the authorities assured of making alternative arrangement for the temple but the proposal was not accepted. Gokak said that authorities have been asked to stop demolition.
