At Tamil Nadu's Kumbakkarai Falls, Ban On Bathing Lifted After Yellow Alert
The water at Kumbakkarai Falls originates from the Kodaikanal hills, cascading down the rocks in two natural stages.

In the Kumbakarai area, bathing has once again been permitted following the lifting of the yellow alert, which was issued due to heavy rains. Waterfalls such as Suruli and Kumbakarai are key tourist attractions in Theni district, Tamil Nadu. The water at Kumbakarai originates from the Kodaikanal hills, cascading down the rocks in two natural stages.

One of the main highlights of Kumbakkarai Falls is its constant water flow. Situated in a dense forest, the water passes over various herbs and trees as it flows down the mountain. It is believed that this water possesses healing properties capable of curing incurable diseases, attracting a large number of tourists throughout the year.

Typically, the waterfall dries up during the summer months. Since March this year, there has been no water flow to the waterfall. However, due to the summer rains, a yellow alert was issued for the Theni district, and tourists were temporarily banned from visiting Kumbakarai Falls. Now, the yellow alert for heavy rain has been lifted, and tourists are once again allowed to bathe in Kumbakarai Falls, as the water flow has stabilised. This notification was issued by David Rajan, the Periyakulam Devanapatti Forest Officer.

After heavy rains in the Western Ghats and catchment areas over the past three days, the mercury level in the region had dropped. On May 10, Periyakulam received 91 mm of rain, Sothuparai 125 mm, Periyar Dam 54.2 mm and Manjalar Dam 62 mm. On May 12 too, Periyakulam received 78 mm, Andipatti 49.6 mm and Sothuparai 16 mm.

The Kumbhakarai waterfall near Periyakulam was flooded on Sunday. As a precautionary measure, the authorities had ordered the falls to be closed to tourists until the floods receded. Following the brief incident, the water level of the Sothuparai dam rose to 101.18 feet (peak 126.28 feet) and the Manjalar dam rose to 43.60 feet (peak 57 feet).
