Assam's Black Widows lay down arms, hope for peace
The group has been fighting for a separate homeland for the Dimasas.

North Cachar: It's a farewell to arms that the Government believes will bring peace back permanently in the hills of North Cachar.

The cadres of the Dima Halam Daogah, Jewel Garlosa militant unit, also known as the Black Widow have spread terror in the hills killing people and burning down houses.

To put an end to this reign of terror the government plan is to move nearly 350 cadres of DHD-J in four designated camps and bring all units of the DHD in one table for "meaningful discussions".

But the big question is what looks good on table, how much of it is going to translate into action on the ground.

Dilip Nunisa of the DHD fighting for an independent homeland for the Dimasas has moved into designated camps and have been in talks with the Centre. Yet for him there is no solution is in sight

He insists, "The movement armed struggle or to come out from the jungle depends on faith, everything depends on faith."

Yet, it's difficult to be optimistic. Basic things like schools, colleges, and infrastructure seem alien to the hills of North Cachar.

Director of Peace Studies from Omio Kumar Das Institute Dr Anuradha Dutta said, "What are we doing with the children who are our future social capital? Education is almost standstill in those areas that will lead to nothing but militancy."

For now, everyone is getting ready for the big ceremonial surrender of the Black Widows in front of the Assam Chief Minister.

What's your reaction?
