THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The proposed K R Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts, for which the foundation stone was laid way back in 2006, has been revived with the government considering to set up it as an international centre in Asian Aesthetics which will be a first of its kind in the country. The proposed Institute is included in the one year programme of the government and its office will start functioning at Thiruvananthapuram shortly. Renowned filmmaker Shaji N Karun has discussed the project with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and it is likely to be announced in the next Cabinet meeting. Shaji N Karun said that the Institute will not be a copy of the Pune Film Institute. A concept will be developed for providing training in Asian Aesthetics, which is now not conceived anywhere in India.  ‘’Film industry will also be part of the course. The idea is that the Institute will be a learning platform in all areas related to arts, music, culture, science and architecture,’’ he said. The Institute will be on the lines of  Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) or Indian Institute of Management (IIM). It will be like a university where the aspiring students can do their post- graduate course and conduct research in any  specific area of their interest. The majority of the Indian students now  depend on other countries for research in the field of Asian Aesthetics.  The proposed Institute will not only attract Indian students but also those from abroad, if there are specialisations in Asian Aesthetics. According to Shaji N Karun, as had been decided earlier the Institute will come up at Kottayam, which is the birthplace of former President K R Narayanan. Though the then Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Priyaranjan Dasmunshi laid the foundation stone for the proposed Institute on January 6, 2006, at Thekkumthala near Pallickathode in Kottayam district, nothing had materialised so far. Now the initiative of the government will help in realising the dream of establishing the Institute, in a year. Shaji N Karun said that the final shape of the project will be evolved after discussions with various personalities in this field, both from within the country and from abroad. Minister for Cinema Industry Ganesh Kumar said that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will hold a meeting again to finalise the project. Shaji N Karun had preliminary discussions on the draft of functioning of the Institute, he said.
