The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 5% reduction in water supply for Mumbai starting Thursday as a precautionary step to ensure the existing water reserve lasts longer. This reduction will double to 10% from June 5 onwards.
However, Mumbaikars are urged not to panic, as the BMC appeals to all citizens to use water judiciously. Due to lower-than-average rainfall in October 2023, the water stock is 5.64% less compared to the previous year. As of May 25, 2024, the dams supplying water to Mumbai hold 1,40,202 million liters, which is only 9.69% of the annual requirement of 14,47,363 million liters.

In addition to the current supply, Mumbai will receive an additional 1,37,000 million liters from Bhatsa Dam and 91,130 million liters from Upper Vaitarna Dam. The Indian Meteorological Department has also predicted a timely arrival of the monsoon this year, providing further assurance. The water cuts will also affect Thane, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, and surrounding villages supplied by the BMC. These reductions will remain in effect until sufficient rainfall replenishes the water stocks.
The BMC emphasises the importance of water-saving practices:
- Drink only as much water as needed.
- Use a bucket instead of a shower for bathing.
- Avoid leaving taps running while brushing teeth or doing household chores.
- Use a bucket and cloth for cleaning vehicles instead of a hose.
- Opt for wiping floors and surfaces with a wet cloth instead of washing them.
- Wash full loads of laundry to maximize water efficiency.
- Install nozzles on taps to reduce water flow.
Meanwhile, restaurants and hotels have been asked to serve water only upon request. Mumbaikars are being encouraged to regularly check for leaks in water systems, along with adopting water-saving procedures for industrial and commercial establishments. By adopting these measures, Mumbaikars can help conserve water and support the BMC’s efforts to manage the city’s water supply efficiently.
