SALEM: The principal and district sessions court on Tuesday dismissed the bail plea of former DMK minister Veerpandi S Arumugam in a case over the alleged grabbing of a poromboke land.Tamil Nadu People’s Rights Movement president Poomozhi had forwarded a complaint to Salem Collector K Maharabushanam on Thursday asking the district administration to recover the poromboke land allegedly usurped by DMK men with tacit support from Arumugam. It was developed as a residential layout and was named after Chezian, Arumugam’s deceased son.The organisation had first cried foul over the issue in September 2008. But the police and the administration sat on its complaint. In light of the current heat on landgrabbers, an emboldened Poomozhi approached the district administration again. The complaint was forwarded to the city police for investigation.Even as Arumugam’s interrogation in the Angammal Colony and Premier Mills cases was on, his lawyers moved the principal and district sessions court in Narasothipatti for bail into the poromboke land grab case. But, judge Baskar dismissed the plea saying that the police were yet to file a complaint and begin an inquiry.HC Throws Out Plea for Custody ModificationIn a related development, the Madras High Court threw out a plea by Arumugam seeking modification to its previous verdict on his police custody.Dismissing the plea, Justice G Rajasuria observed that “extraordinary situation warrants extraordinary remedy and this is one in that line.”‘Landlords Refuse to Rent Us House’Meanwhile, the former residents of Angammal Colony complained to the Judicial Magistrate III of being driven out of home by landlords who fear the wrath of the DMK biggie’s henchmen.
