PUDUCHERRY: “By arresting a trafficker, you are preventing at least 1,000 crimes”. This was a piece of advice to police personnel from Dr P M Nair, ADGP of Central Reserve Police Force.“Human trafficking in all forms violates human dignity and rights. The main target of this criminal act is the weaker sections of society, especially women and children,” Nair said addressing a two-day workshop-cum-training on ‘combating trafficking in human beings’ here on Monday.Recollecting his interaction with a trafficker in jail, Nair said that the accused had confessed to trafficking nearly 3,000 Nepali women from 1991 to 2001. He came to Delhi as a taxi driver but later turned to the lucrative job of human trafficking. The trafficker was arrested, tried and put into jail for 10 years, he said, adding that thousands of women had been saved from becoming his victims in the next 10 years.  The ADGP added that ignorance of rights, illiteracy, gender discrimination, neglect/abuse of children, economic deprivations, unemployment and above all increasing ‘demand’ leads to trafficking. He asked the police to device a crime map while investigating an organised crime (trafficking) in order to identify the spotter (of girls in villages etc), the seller (parents), the purchaser (agents) and the exploiters (owners of brothels, massage parlours).Top police officials, inspectors, sub-inspectors and representatives of NGOs are participating in the workshop, which will conclude on Tuesday.
