Aligarh: A day after AMU decided to cancel Students’ Union election, the Executive Council (EC) of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Thursday agreed to hold the polls ‘at the earliest’.
“In an emergency meeting, the EC unanimously resolved to hold the election to the AMU Students’ Union, Women’s College Students’ Union and for the students’ representation on AMU Court,” said AMU PRO Rahat Abrar told News18.

The meeting was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah.
AMU on Wednesday cancelled the election to the Students' Union, scheduled to be held on September 27, citing "disturbing situation" due to the participation of expelled students and "criminals" during the poll campaign.
After the decision, many Students’ Union candidates staged a dharna in the campus on Wednesday demanding to reinstate the students’ body.
The Executive Council has constituted a committee with Prof. M. Amanullah Khan, as its head, to discuss issues with the protesting student leaders, said a notification issued by AMU Registrar, Prof. Asfar Ali Khan.
“The EC has also made it clear that election will be held only when there is a conducive atmosphere and the undesirable elements are shunned by the students themselves,” said Abrar.
On Thursday, the Vice Chancellor personally spoke to several candidates sitting on dharna to resolve the issue and end the protest.
It is unlikely that the protesting student leaders will call off dharna as they are likely to demand a specific date for the election.
