HUBLI: Backtracking from his earlier stand that the government will wind up the Pohang Iron and Steel company (POSCO) project at Halligudi in Gadag district, Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries Murugesh Nirani said that the proposal will be reconsidered only if businessmen and intellectuals give their assent. He was speaking after inaugurating an industrial awareness programme here on Saturday, where he averred that 90 per cent of the farmers had come forward to give their land and were pressing the government to reconsider establishing the steel plant.“I will discuss the issue with Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda and former CM B S Yeddyurappa; the government will go ahead with the project in Gadag only if the CM gives his accord to the project in principle,” he said, adding that else the project may be established in some other district.Nirani also stated that industrial development was a must for which land was necessary. He claimed that only 3 lakh of the 5 lakh hectares of land needed for acquisition was agricultural land. “We have not even utilised one per cent of the available land for industrites during the last 60 years,” the minister said.
