Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has called for greater representation of SC/ST in India judiciary. He argued that a centralized system will offer greater opportunities for the deprived communities.
The statement somewhere seems to suggest absence of any reservation currently. The reality is that reservations for SC/ST and other weaker sections exist in various states when examinations for judicial services are conducted. The rules pertaining to reservation are made by the state government in consultation with the respective High Court. Also interestingly the Supreme Court also took a PIL on the matter and the various state governments had raised this objection.
