Adventure tourism in Gods Own Country
Yet another tourist season round the corner; Kochi geared up to welcome travellers with a mix of health and fun tourism...

KOCHI: Adventure tourism is catching up in God’s Own Country with more tourists flocking to capture the spirit of Kerala. And in the very heart of Kochi city lies the adventure for those who want to set their adrenaline pumping. The Marina, situated at the Bolgatty island in Kochi known for hosting international yachting events, has created a passion among locals to try out yachting by sailing out to the seas and capturing the wind while they set sail on these sail boats.  And this season, tourists were seen visiting the Marina to capture the waft of the Arabian sea mixed with the thrill of such an adventure. Yachting Association president Punnoose P Elias said: “Training is being provided to those who are interested in trying out their hand in yachting for Rs 5,000 per year.” Also, white water rafting is slowly capturing the imagination of Keralites as tourism companies like Kalypso adventures take their groups out to the backwaters of Kochi and the rest of the state to experience the rush of the waters flowing through Kerala coast. But even for city people, their preferences have always been to move into the wilds. Now more schools and colleges from various parts of the country and the city are seen planning tours to Munnar and Thekkady.  Situated in the Western Ghats and providing the promise of fun and adventure mixed with the enchanting greenery of nature, Munnar has earned its position as one of the best destinations for trekking in South India. Famous for its tea plantations, valleys, hills and wildlife, Munnar provides one of the best locations to camp out with friends and family.  “Situated close to the second highest peak, the Pulimala of the Western Ghats  is flocked with people coming from all over the state and also the country to spend many nights out for trekking and camping,” says Senthil Kumar, a tourist guide in Munnar:Besides, the Lock heart gap at Pothemedu viewpoint in Munnar has become quite a rage with tourists as it provides excellent opportunity for rock climbing and rappelling.  For both professionals and tourists this seems to be the best destination. And for those who prefer mixing adventure with nature, Thekkady provides a different experience. Located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady gives adventure tourists the best opportunity to mix  with the wild. And the difference with Thekkady for such tourists is that they get a chance to sleep in the wild as it provides night stays in the form of tree-top houses and mud huts.
