Thiruvananthapuram: Popular Malayalam actor Dileep was questioned by the police for more than 12 hours on Wednesday in connection with the abduction and sexual assault of an actress. Dileep entered the Aluva Police Club at 12.30pm with director-friend Nadirsha and left the premises at 1.06am.
While leaving the police club, Dileep said he gave a detailed statement to the police on his complaint which accuses the prime accused in the case, Sunil Kumar, of blackmail. "I am confident. The police are investigating well into the case. We are with the police and want the truth to come out,” Dileep said.
Besides his complaint, Dileep and Nadirshah were also asked about other details, including the conspiracy behind the February 17 incident. They were questioned separately. Actor Siddique and Nadirsha's brother Samad came to see them at the Aluva Police Club, but were not allowed to meet the duo.
A recorded phone conversation and a letter written by Sunil Kumar had alleged that Dileep was in the know. Refuting the claims, the actor has said that he was being blackmailed by Sunil Kumar, also knows as ‘Pulsar Suni’, and was asked to pay Rs 1.5 crore to avoid being dragged into the case.
Besides Dileep and Nadirshah, police also reportedly recorded the statement of the actor's manager, who had received a purported threat call. The statement was recorded by a team of officials led by ADGP B Sandhya.
Six persons, including 'Pulsar' Suni, Martin and Vigeesh have been arrested in connection with the incident. The actress, who has worked in Tamil and Telugu films, was abducted and allegedly molested inside her car for two hours by the accused, who had forced their way into the vehicle on February 17 night and later escaped in a busy area in Kochi. The victim has warned that she would initiate legal action against those who target her with baseless charges.
The actress, who had been keeping away from making any public statement so far, said she was speaking out as a recent remark by an actor against her had "pained" her. She also said the probe into the incident, which occurred in February, was moving in the right direction and that she has full faith in the police.
In a separate development, the Association of Malyalam Movie Artists (AMMA) held an executive meeting in Kochi, where it discussed the case at length. AMMA president and Lok Sabha MP, Innocent, had earlier said that there was no need to discuss the case as investigation was on.
On Thursday, the AMMA will hold its general body meeting in Kochi where the issue is likely to be discussed again.
