KOCHI: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan has threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike from December 7 if the Centre will not come up with a solution for the Mullaperiyar issue. Speaking at Chappath near Upputhara at Mullaperiyar Samara Samiti pandal on Wednesday, V S Achuthanandan demanded that the government should decommission the 116-years-old dam.VS said that he and E S Bijimol MLA would go on afast at Mullaperiyar Samara Samithi pandal. “The Mullaperyar issue is not an interstate water dispute, but has become a movement for the survival of millions. Keeping apart political differences, both the LDF and the UDF will take up the issue and launch a mass agitation” he said. He firmly demanded that a new dam should be constructed and the amount for it would be collected from the people of Kerala if the Centre will not sanction it. Tamil Nadu should respect the lives of the people and lower the water level to 120 ft. “All Malayalis are united in this issue. The State government and the MPs should press the Centre to find an immediate answer for the issue” VS added. The LDF team consists N K Premachandran, C Divakaran, Mathew T Thomas, K Chandrappan, P K Sasidaran, Ramachandran Kadannappally, P C Thomas and Vaikom Viswan. They embarked on a boat to Mullaperiyar dam from Kumili boat landing station.
