CHENNAI: Revealing his rich experience under the tutelage of Maharajapuram Santhanam in classical carnatic music, Dr Ganesh sang felicitously for Laya Madhuraa at the GRT Convention Centre. He kept up the tempo of the recital in style, the genre of which, has its origin in the melting artistry of his mentor. He commenced with Gowla Raga (Sri Mahaganapathim) of Dikshitar with enlivening swara prastharas at Prikasakaro with permutated swaras ‘Ree Ma Pa Nee Saa’, exhibiting his assessments of the understanding of the features of classical music. He next rendered the Jyothi Swarupini Raga (Ganamudha) of Koteeswara Iyer. He revealed his grasp on Padanthura purity of the keerthana. Although Raga Vinyasa of Dhanyasi (Kanakasabapathikku) of Gopalakrishna Bharathi proved his astuteness and tonal eloquence, the interpretative glamour was missing in presentation. An elevating rendition with a sense of proportion in alapana and kalpanaswaras were brought out in his handling of raga Kalyani (Enthuko Nee Manasu) of Thyagaraja, revealing his propensity to reach the top slot. The ambience was so firmly established that he could weave the raga’s spell with structured delivery to dwell on Karvais on different notes at every stage, with no teetering on weak links. A few of the presentations on Sathya Sai and Guru Raghavendra, with a stamp of artistry of Maharajapuram tradition were impressive, earning him the appreciation of the audience.Dr Ganesh seems to have certainly risen in the tides of a keenly nuanced tradition. The niraval he brought out had a mellow effect and the swaras accentuated at a steady flow. However, one felt that the voice in the upper register, needed to be cultivated more subtly, by intense practice and effort. This torch-bearer of the Maharajapuram tradition, with his excellent intonation, is sure to rise to the top. While VV Srinivasa Rao (violin) empathised wholly with the singer, Mridanganist Kumbakonam Saravanan served the needs of the day faithfully.
