SABARIMALA: The police will take steps to provide more facilities for the pilgrims for darsan of Lord Ayyappa and coordinate with other voluntary agencies engaged in humanitarian activities at Sannidhanam. Addressing newsmen here on Wednesday, Sannidhanam police special officer T Gopalakrishna Pillai said that directives had been given to help the pilgrims to climb the Holy Steps. He said that adequate number of police personnel was deployed at the Holy Steps so that the average number of pilgrims who climb the steps had gone up to 90 per minute from 60 pilgrims earlier. Gopalakrishna Pillai said that the personnel would coordinate with the voluntary organisations such as Akhila Bharatha Ayyappa Seva Sangham and the Sabarimala Ayyappa Seva Samajam in the distribution of medicated drinking water to the pilgrims held up for long hours in the queues at Valiyanadapandal and on the trekking path between Marakoottam and Saramkuthi. He said that the personnel would continue to participate in the cleaning programme at Sannidhanam and surrounding areas. Directives had been given to the police to perform their duties in a pilgrim-friendly manner at Sopanam and Marakoottam, he said. Gopalakrishna Pillai said that a total number of 2,050 security forces, including Central Forces, was on duty at Sannidhanam in the second phase which concludes on December 8. Of them, 13 are DySPs, 27 CIs, 67 SIs and ASIs and 1,000 constables and head constables, security men connected with bomb squad, intelligence and police personnel connected with other wings, he said.
