RAMANATHAPURAM: A nine-year-long struggle came to fruition for 72 persons of the Arunthathiar community here, after they were allotted government land on Sunday. In 2002, following repeated requests to the State in this regard, a group from the community, who were living on poromboke lands, were given four-acre private property at Kusavankulam. However, after some persons tried to grab the land, 72 Arunthathiars moved the court seeking its intervention in the matter. The court subsequently issued an order to the government, asking it to measure the disputed property and to hand over the land originally allotted to the petitioners.Acting on the court order, government officials conducted a survey of the property in question. On Sunday, the 72 persons from Kusavankudi, Kavakulam, Sakkarakottai and Soorankottai areas were allotted three cents of land each free of cost. The construction of houses for the beneficiaries is also expected to start soon. The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for allotting the land to them. Dr Ambedkar Sanitary Workers Association president Rajamanickam said that the beneficiaries were indebted to the Chief Minister for the gesture.
