250 sovereigns stolen from shop

A gang of six escaped with over 250 sovereigns of gold ornaments from a jewellery shop at Sembanarkoil near Mayiladuthurai in the district on Sunday at around midnight.   One Arunachalam of Sembanarkoil has been running a jewellery shop at Sembanarkoil bazaar. His residence is located in the backside of the jewellery shop.

On Sunday midnight, miscreants gained entry into his residence by breaking open the door in the backyard.

The burglars threatened the two women at home at knifepoint and asked them to hand over the jewels worn by them.

Later, they entered the jewellery showroom and decamped with the ornaments put on display.

They also damaged the surveillance cameras and burglar alarm at the shop.

Initial estimates suggest that over 250 sovereigns of gold had been burgled.

However, the exact quantity of sovereigns burgled would be known only after complete assessment of the stocks position.

On information, District Superintendent of Police  G Ramar and other officials visited the spot and conducted inquiries.

Fingerprint experts collected samples. Sniffer dogs were also brought to the spot. Sembanarkoil police have registered a case and are investigating.
