RAMANATHAPURAM/COLOMBO: The 23 fishermen detained in Sri Lanka for allegedly trespassing into its territorial waters were released by a local court there on Wednesday. They are expected to reach Ramanathapuram on Thursday.
U Arulanantham, State coordinator of the Alliance for the Release of Innocent Fishermen, said the 23 fishermen were detained by the Lankan navy for allegedly crossing the international maritime boundary line (IMBL) on June 20.After being produced before a local court, they were ordered to be lodged in prison till July 1. Thereafter, they were moved to prison. Due to the efforts of the Indian Government, though, following the growing clamour for their release, the court ordered the release of the men and their five mechanised boats on Wednesday.
