VELLORE: Two of five convicts in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case have been shifted to Puzhal Prison (I) on the outskirts of Chennai, from the Vellore Central Prison for Men at Thorapadi near Vellore on Tuesday. The two convicts, Robert Pius (44) and Jayakumar (49) have been shifted from the central prison where they have spent more than 15 years. They have been imprisoned here since 1998 along with Murugan (alias) Sriharan, Perarivalan and Shanthan, who were sentenced to death in the assassination case.Robert Pius was the ninth accused in the assassination case of Rajiv Gandhi, while Jayakumar was tenth. “The officials at Vellore Prison on Monday night received official communication from higher authorities directing to shift Robert Pius and Jayakumar to Puzhal Prison (I) immediately. The transfer of the prisoners has been done due to administrative reasons,” said prison sources.The duo was transferred from the Vellore prison under tight security. The police team lead by Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Armed Reserved Police, took the duo into custody at 8 am and handed them over to prison officials at Puzhal by 10.45 am.The duo were not aware of the reason for their sudden shift, an official said and added that the two maintained a low profile during all these years.
