After sitting on a hunger strike for days against police's "failure" to arrest four men who allegedly gang raped her, an 18-year-old girl attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison in the district.

The girl, a BSc student, had filed a police complaint against four men, alleging that she was gang raped by them in Nurpur town when she was returning from her tuition classes on February 2, police said.

Demanding the accused be arrested, she sat on dharna outside Bijnore collectorate office on February 13 and after few days she went on hunger strike.

Meanwhile, the family members of the accused also sat on dharna, alleging that she is making false allegations to extort money.

On February 16, she ended her fast and threatened that she will commit suicide if the accused were not arrested in next four days.

Yesterday at around at 11 am, the girl, accompanied by two other friends came to the collectorate office after consuming some poisonous substance, police said.

She has been admitted to district hospital and her condition is stated to be stable, police said.

Bareilly zone IG Zaki Ahmad has asked area superintendent VK Shekhar to investigate into the matter.
