The incident took place at Sojat area in Sri Ganganagar, some 500 km from Jaipur.
"Gurumeet Singh had been arrested for liquor smuggling Wednesday. A court remanded him in judicial custody yesterday (Thursday) following which he was lodged in the local prison," a police officer said.
The officer said that as per the jail administration, Singh fainted in the jail and was rushed to a hospital where he died Thursday night.
Accusing the police of torturing the youth, local legislator Sona Devi, the deceased youth's family members and several local residents tried to block a state highway on Friday morning.
"Gurumeet Singh was in police station for a day after being arrested. He was tortured and beaten up. He had no history of any serious medical condition," Sona Devi alleged.
Police baton charged the villagers when they started hurling stones, the police officer said.
