Bharathan (14), son of Murugan and native of Vizhapallam village near Kurinjipadi, was a resident of the school hostel. Around 6.30 am he had begun his football coaching; however, while playing he fainted and later died.
His fellow students, intimated the warden, who rushed the boy to the Cuddalore GH. However, on arrival at the hospital, he was declared brought dead.
When news of the boy’s sudden death spread, VCK cadre led by State deputy general secretary Thirumarban along with the boy’s parents and relatives, sat in front of the school, demanding an investigation into it what they claim is a “suspicious death.”
The boy’s mother, Anandhi, said, “My son doesn’t have any health problems. This morning, the school administration informed us that my son had been admitted in the hospital, and a short while later, they told us he was dead.
How could he die suddenly while playing? We have our doubts and want an immediate investigation into his death.”
Bharathan’s father Murugan also submitted a petition to the sub-collector, in which he said, “Action should be taken against those who are responsible for this. I have also filed a police complaint. In Chennai, when a school girl Shruthi died and another boy drowned, action was taken against those responsible. Similar action is required here as well.”
Despite attempts by DSP, sub-collector and tasildar to pacify the crowd, the agitation continued till evening. Later, the police arrested 60 protesters.
