BANGALORE: The 108 ambulances will henceforth carry the insignia of the state government and not photographs of either the Chief Minister or the health minister.Sources told Express here on Sunday that Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda felt it odd to derive political mileage out of the services rendered to the people at the time of pain and agony.“However, this is in no way to belittle the decision of former CM B S Yeddyurappa, whose photograph, along with that of the then health minister Sriramulu, was displayed on ambulances,” sources added.Ever since the 108 ambulance service was introduced on November 1, 2008, it received about 2.50 crore phone calls and saved the lives of about 13,86,918 people. It may be recalled that the Congress had objected to the photographs of Yeddyurappa and Sriramulu being displayed on the ambulances as the scheme was being funded by the Centre as well.“There was a suggestion that the 108 ambulances should carry photographs of the Prime Minister, Union health minister, chief minister and state health minister. But there are three health ministers at the Centre,” sources said. “The chief minister is of the view that the ambulance must look like what it is and not a photo gallery, and directed that the state government’s insignia must be carried instead of photographs,” the sources added.
