1 killed, many hurt as pipe falls on Thane train
Driver trapped in engine compartment for two hours.

Mumbai: A huge water pipe came crashing down on a running train in northeast Mumbai on Friday morning, killing one person, injuring at least 12 commuters and trapping the driver.

The pipe as well as a bridge being built to support it collapsed, officials from the Central Railway and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) said. The accident occurred between Mulund and Thane.

Two hours after the incident, the train driver, identified as Ramachandran, remained trapped inside the engine compartment. One person was killed and 12 were injured in the accident, a Central Railway spokesperson said.

A rescue and relief team of the railways and MCGM fire brigade is engaged in clearing the debris from the railway tracks. The authorities have also closed the water supply from the pipeline until normalcy is restored.

The Central Railways suspended all suburban services on all the lines till the tracks are cleared.

Long distance train services on the Pune and Kolkata and Chennai sectors have also been hit.

With a view to clear the rush of thousands of commuters, the Thane Municipal Corporation, Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation and the Bombay Electric Supply & Transport have deployed extra buses.
