How to Fix OneDrive Error “Cloud File Provider Is Not Running” (0x8007016a)
"Error 0x8007016A: The cloud file provider is not running" is an error that can happen whenever you try to use OneDrive; it's caused by a myriad of issues, including corrupt Windows 10 updates, Files On-Demand settings, glitched syncing, disabled OneDrive syncing, or power plan restrictions. Follow the troubleshooting steps in this guide to fix the OneDrive error and get your files from the cloud file provider.
How Do I Fix Error Code 0x8007016a?

Update your Windows 10.

The KB4457128 update has issues with OneDrive. To update Windows 10, press Win + I to open Settings, then go to Update & Security and click Check for updates. If an update is available, click Download and install. Skip this step if you're using an updated version of Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Turn off Files On-Demand

Open your OneDrive. For some computers, OneDrive is a program that you can open by clicking the cloud icon in your taskbar. Others can open File Explorer, then right-click the folder next to the OneDrive icon and select Settings.

Uncheck the box next to "Save space…" or click Download all files. Doing so will turn off Files On-Demand and keep all your files downloaded to your computer.

Reset OneDrive.

Press ⊞ Win+R and enter wsreset.exe. Click Ok to run that command and a blank Command Prompt window will open. After 10 seconds, the window will close, and a Microsoft Store window will open that you can close.

Reset OneDrive again.

Use different commands to get your OneDrive to reset. Press Win + R to open the Run prompt and enter %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset then press Enter. If you see a "Windows cannot find…" error, enter C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset and press Enter. Use C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset and press Enter if you still encounter an error. If you're still seeing an error after using the different commands, you don't have OneDrive installed on your computer.

Enable OneDrive syncing.

Not allowing OneDrive to sync will cause the "Error 0x8007016A" message. Type Onedrive into your search bar and click the app result. This will allow OneDrive to start and sync your files. OneDrive may not automatically start when you turn on your computer. You can change this to prevent the error in the future by opening Startup Apps in Settings.

Change your laptop's power plan.

Syncing will automatically pause if your device uses battery-saving mode. You can either disable this setting in your OneDrive settings or you can open Control Panel and change your laptop's power plan in Power Options.

What's your reaction?
