Simple Thank You Messages for Gift
Let the gift-giver know how much you appreciate their thoughtfulness. When someone gives you a present—whether it's for your birthday, a holiday, another special occasion, or just because!—it's important to let them know how much you value their time, attention, and efforts. As etiquette coach Tami Claytor notes, "Whatever the gesture is, be very specific and say thank you for X, Y and Z. Explain to the person…how [the gift] will be used." These thank-you messages are the perfect thing to send their way: It means so much that you thought of me. I couldn't have picked out a better gift for myself if I tried. This was exactly what I needed. I can't wait to put it to good use! Thank you for making my day extra special. There's no better gift than you—but this one comes pretty close. Thanks! How did you know this was exactly what I needed? You're so thoughtful. Your present made me smile. Thank you so much. Thank you for your thoughtfulness…and for always putting up with me! Your gift was just what I wanted! I can't wait to use it. I am so touched that you remembered me. Quotes to Express Thanks & Appreciation
Express thanks by reciting the words of a celebrated figure. Many wise people throughout time have figured out meaningful ways to express gratitude and appreciation. If you're having trouble coming up with your own thank-you message, try recycling the words of a famous figure: "We all have our down days, but it's not hard to smile and say, 'Thank you.'" –Yvette Nicole Brown "If I had a flower for every time I thought of you...I could walk through my garden forever." –Alfred, Lord Tennyson "Life is an awful, ugly place to not have a best friend." –Sarah Dessen, Someone Like You "Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art.... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival." –C. S. Lewis, The Four Loves "The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant." –Max de Pree "There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature." –Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey "Thank you for accepting me as I am, with my virtues and defects." –Jenni Rivera "I thank you God for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees, and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes." –e. e. cummings "Walk together. Feel the heartbeats. Experience the presence. This is how to be thankful." –Amit Ray "What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies." –Aristotle "Express gratitude for the greatness of small things." –Richie Norton "If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough." –Meister Eckhart
How Else to Show Gratitude
If someone does something generous for you, return the favor. International etiquette consultant, author, and YouTuber Jamila Musayeva's rule is, if someone treats you to dinner or goes out of their way to do something else nice for you, "you have to do the same to the person. Maybe if they invited you out for lunch, invite them to lunch in three months’ time." Musayeva notes it doesn't have to be exactly tit-for-tat: "If for some reason you can't invite them to lunch, obviously, [give them] something that would probably be, budget-wise, around the same expenditure." "It's not to say that if someone spent $25, you have to equally spend $25," she clarifies, observing the thank-you gift is more about acknowledgement than about literally returning money to their pocket. "This is just social grace."
Show your thanks with a personalized gift. If someone does you a favor—especially one that can't be easily reciprocated, like writing you a recommendation letter for a job—show your appreciation by gifting them something you know they'll find particularly meaningful. "If you know the person really good," Musayeva says, "if you know maybe they've been talking to you a lot about [how] they want to…try out this painting class [or] they want to get themselves something for home maybe…you've got a gift in that." She goes on: "It's not really about the price tag, but it's really about what they were looking for, and you kind of were attuned to their needs, and you cater to their needs."
Make a habit of offering support. To make sure the people you care about feel your love on the regular, get into the habit of offering to help them with anything they might have going on. "Everybody has a lot going on in their life," notes life coach Taylor Rochestie. "And so when you turn your focus towards helping others and asking other people, 'What can I do for you today? Is there any way I can help you?' it really shows your appreciation for other people."
The Importance of Expressing Gratitude
It makes our loved ones feel better—and us, too. Countless studies have shown that making it a habit to practice gratitude doesn't just make our loved ones feel good about themselves, it also makes us feel more happy, confident, and blessed. As Chang observes, "Gratitude heavily correlates to happiness and…[creates] more self worth, and then it transpires into confidence and self-certainty and independence as well." Life and career coach Annie Lin, MBA, recommends turning gratitude into a daily habit: "Spend a few minutes in the morning and before bed thinking about what you appreciate in life. Learn to be present and become curious and observant in life."
